This Is the Proper Position to Poop in, According to a Doctor

Yes, there's a better form for taking a dump, and it's not sitting down. According toDr. Karan Raj, M.D., a surgeon with the National Health Service in England (and popular TikToker), the proper way to poop is to pop a squat.

In a TikTok duet video, user @karissaeats is visibly frustrated by a squat toilet, a toilet designed to squatted over rather than sat upon. Dr. Karan Raj explains in the video that this is actually the best kind of toilet for pooping.

If you're poopingwith your hips parallel to your butt, the way most Western toilets are designed to be sat on, Dr. Raj reveals that you're actually making pooping more difficult than it needs to be.

This Is the Proper Position to Poop in, According to a Doctor

"The puborectalis muscle chokes the rectum and creates an angle," says Dr. Raj in the video. "That means you need to push harder." Dr. Raj compared the rectum in this position to choked cable or a kink in a hose.

By squatting, the puborectalis muscle, A.K.A. the muscle you use to push your poop out, is more relaxed. "Your rectum is straightened and there's less straining," he says.

If you don't have a squat toilet, no worries. Dr. Raj recommends investing in a Squatty Potty, a little device that lifts your knees up into a squat-like position to make pooping easier. He also recommends putting a rolled up towel or a roll of toilet paper under each foot as a more economical option to get the same formation minus a Squatty Potty.

Good luck, and happy pooping.
