Why we chose it

Xiaomi was chosen by consumers as the best-rated robot vacuum cleaner brand in the 2019/20 Finder Retail Awards. And with the Roborock S6 Pure receiving an average score of 4.6 out of 5 from almost 100 customer ratings on productreview.com.au, it's our pick as the best overall robot vacuum cleaner.

The Roborock S6 Pure uses a laser navigation system to map your home. It also splits your home into multiple areas so you can program clean-ups for different zones. You can use the Roborock app to set up exclusion zones where you don't want the vacuum to go, and this model can clean up to 300 square metres on one charge. It also features a 180mL water tank and adjustable water flow for when you need it to mop your floor.

Price (RRP): $1,299.00From $978.99 to $1,026.90 at eBayCheck availability at Amazon

Why we chose it

The Eufy Robovac X8 Hybrid stands out as a powerful robot vacuum cleaner, best suited for those with pets and lots of carpets to keep clean on a regular basis. Like most robot vacuum cleaners, it's a story of general maintenance rather than heavy-duty cleaning.

The modular mopping head is clever because it doesn't require you to remove the existing dustbin, although here the Eufy Robovac X8 Hybrid isn't quite as impressive when it comes to actual mop cleaning, with only gravity making the water move across your floors.

Price (RRP): $399.00Check price at AmazonCheck availability at eBay

Why we chose it

The Ecovacs Deebot U2 is the lowest cost vacuuming robot that Ecovacs has brought to Australia, part of the same family as fancier devices such as the Ecovacs Deebot U2 Pro or the even more premium Ecovacs Deebot Ozmo T8 AIVI.

That cheaper price point does come with some compromises in terms of battery life and cleaning capacity, but if you're after a vacuuming robot for the basics on a budget, and especially for smaller houses and apartments, it's a decent option.

The Ecovacs Deebot U2 uses the typical rotating whisker approach of most robot vacuums alongside a central suction area where it will collect whatever it rolls over. There's a single container that combines a water section for mopping and a small container for dust and hair and other particles that the Ecovacs Deebot U2 picks up, with a small brush and cutter that pops onto the top.

Best robot vacuum cleaners in Australia

It comes with a 400ml dustbin with a 300ml mopping capacity and has a maximum power mode if you've got particularly dirty carpets.

★★★★★Read Ecovacs Deebot U2 Pro Review

Pros

Cons

Price (RRP): $599.00Check price at AmazonCheck availability at eBay

Why we chose it

The Ecovacs Deebot U2 Pro sells itself as the "pet-focused" robot vacuum cleaner for the budget-sensitive buyer. Ecovacs has done some good work in meeting the needs of most pet owners with an optional larger dustbin to collect all that stray fur and fluff as well as mopping functionality for those less pleasant pet experiences in your home. However, the lower quality AI does lead to a robot vacuum that gets lost just a little more often than you'd like.

You get quite a lot of accessories in the box with the Ecovacs Deebot U2 Pro, which is a little surprising given its relative budget status. The whisker brooms have to be clipped on, and the same is true for the optional mopping head. While the default bin includes the mop water reservoir, the Ecovacs Deebot U2 Pro won't actually mop until it recognises that you've added the mopping plate and either the washable mop head or a disposable one.

Best mid-range robot vacuum

Finder Score:

★★★★★

Pros

Cons

Price (RRP): $799.00From $791.45 at AmazonCheck availability at eBay

Why we chose it

Priced at $799, the Ecovacs Deebot N8 Pro sits between cheap models that don't clean as well as you'd hope and high-priced vacuums with all the bells and whistles. It's a good robot vacuum cleaner at a solid price.

It comes with a flat wall charger with a standard cable and has an optional auto-empty station for $399. Like most (but not all) robot vacuum cleaners, there are 2 rotating sweeper brushes to fit to the underside. You also get an optional mop head for when hardwood floors need cleaning.

The Ecovacs Deebot N8 Pro uses the same Ecovacs app for Android and iOS as its other robot vacuum cleaners. The app has definitely improved in its set-up routines and general ease of use over that period. It also allows you to set multi-floor mapping, create virtual no-go zones and set the level of cleaning for identified areas depending on your needs. The Ecovacs Deebot N8 Pro is smarter than you'd expect at its price point.

Best premium robot vacuum

Pros

Cons

Price (RRP): $1,299.00Check availability at eBayCheck availability at Amazon

Why we chose it

The Ecovacs Deebot T9+ is a smart vacuum cleaner that ships with its own emptying station and the promise of air freshening as it vacuums as an added bonus, using air freshener capsules to deliver 1 of 3 scents to your floor as it vacuums.

The auto-empty station is a large white tower of a device that the Ecovacs Deebot T9+ will trundle up onto to charge when not in use, but that does mean you've got to dedicate a fair bit more space, both horizontally and vertically, than you do with other robot vacuum chargers. As with Ecovacs' other mid- to premium-range vacuums, you get a 2D map of each floor you put the unit onto as well as an optional 3D rendered map.

The Ecovacs Deebot T9+ fulfils the essential mission of any robot vacuum cleaner and mop quite well. It's smart enough to mostly avoid getting trapped, and when used daily, can keep a wide area clean all by itself, including emptying its dustbin. You can also set "no-mop" zones if you only want specific areas covered.

Why we chose it

Dreame's L10 Pro is priced at the mid to high range for robot vacuum cleaners, selling itself on its LIDAR smarts and improved vacuuming capabilities. It can't quite replace a full standalone vacuum cleaner, but its intelligence in not getting stuck and managing its power to ensure a good maintenance clean make it a recommended product.

It has a 570ml dust tank that slots in at the front, replaceable with a supplied 270ml water tank for use with its mopping function. The water tank slots onto the base of the vacuum, with the Dreame L10 Pro intelligently recognising when it's fitted.

How to compare robot vacuum cleaners

Before deciding which robot vacuum cleaner to purchase, there are several factors you should consider. If you're having trouble choosing, check out our list of the best robot vacuums of this year.

Home size

Some models are especially tailored for small spaces, while others are ideal for larger environments up to 185 square metres (roughly equivalent to a 2- or 3-storey house). For those living in tight spaces, you'll want to work out if your robot vacuum can fit under your bed or drawers.

Cleaning performance

Consider how well your chosen robot vacuum cleaner picks up dirt from hard floors and removes dirt from carpets. It's also important to weigh up how effectively the robot vac is at cleaning in corners and along edges.

Pet hair

If you have pets, look for a model designed to pick up pet hair and fur balls. It can be particularly difficult for a robot vac to thoroughly remove pet hairs from carpeted floors without pushing dirt further into the pile.

Noise

While robot vacuums are usually quieter than regular vacuums, check if your chosen model produces any high-pitched whistle or grinding sound that could be loud enough to disturb neighbours or frighten pets.

Battery life

Battery life can range from around 20 to 140 minutes. Think about how large your home is and whether it's likely your vacuum will get through a full clean without needing a charge.

Auto docking

When the battery charge is low, auto docking allows your robot vacuum to make its own way back to the charger and dock by itself.

Filter type

For those with allergies or intolerances, consider investing in a robot vacuum cleaner that comes with an in-built HEPA filter.

Wi-Fi and app connectivity

Most robot vacuums are smart home enabled so that you can customise your robot vacuum cleaning schedule via your mobile app. You'll be able to turn your robot vac on and off from your phone, pause a cleaning cycle and set your preferred cleaning frequency and times.

Bin size

To avoid frequently emptying the dustbin, opt for a model with a bin size bigger than 600ml. Otherwise, you may find that your dustbin has filled up quickly after a couple of cleans.

How do robot vacuum cleaners navigate?

Robot vacuum cleaners appear like they're roaming around your house aimlessly sometimes, cleaning away the dust that they stumble upon. But in actuality, the technology behind the roaming is quite refined – the machine does have an understanding of where it is and where it has been.

With systems varying between cliff sensors, bump sensors, wall sensors and optical encoders, the technology has the capacity to recognise walls and edges. Most robot vacuum cleaners can also determine how far they've travelled, which direction they've travelled and how long they can clean for before returning to the base to charge.

How do robot vacuum cleaners work with stairs?

There are countless videos on YouTube of robot vacuum cleaners taking a fall down a flight of stairs, not having detected the edge of the floor until the last moment. While amusing to watch, it's entirely inconvenient and can cost you a fair bit if the vacuum breaks.

Thankfully, most robot vacuum cleaners now come equipped with edge detection technology and infra-red sensors that prevent your new friend from taking a tumble. These sensors bounce off the floor, measuring the distance between the unit and the surface, enabling the vacuum to recognise when it's nearing an edge so that it can adjust its course.

What is a robot vacuum cleaner?

Robot vacuums are autonomous vacuums that can clean your floors without the effort required with a traditional vac.

Generally, a robot vacuum cleaner is suitable for cleaning homes that have mainly hard floors. For those with pets, a robot vacuum cleaner can help prevent a build-up of fluff and pet hair. However, while robot vacuum cleaners can come with high tech features, they're actually not as good as traditional vacuums at picking up dirt, especially on carpets.

Robot vacuums can push dirt deeper into the pile of a carpet and eventually damage the carpet. If you have carpet but still want the convenience of a robot vacuum, it's worth investing in a model specifically designed to handle the challenges of carpet.

If you have hard floors, robot vacuums still struggle to clean corners and along edges so you'll need to have a back-up vacuum for those hard to reach areas.

Additional features

The following features can make a robot vacuum easier and more convenient to use.
